The burning Embrace of Impermanence

Photography

These giant sequoias, which have survived centuries of history, are now silent witnesses to the devastating effects of forest fires and climate change. As they disappear, the unique geological and climatic history of our planet is crumbling before our eyes.

Artist Johanna Rummel documented the decay of nature in the United States in 2022. With a keen aesthetic sense, she captured the charred remnants of mammoth trees that once stood 100 meters tall and 5 meters thick. The figures and structures shaped by fire are revealed in black and white photographs, presenting a colorless, yet real world.
