How do immateriality and materiality shape our reality?
How can the connections of being become visible?
Johanna Rummel creates experimental art with forward-looking concepts. The focus of her practical work lies in elaboration with new media tools, including sustainability. She creates art from various materials such as mushroom mycelia, digital fragments, sensors, glass and light. The resulting works shed light on profound issues.
Her approach is unconventional – inspired by science and organic structures. Her detailed research emerges fully in different dimensions. The resulting concepts have irresistible visual power.
Life and Artwork
The life of Johanna Rummel, who was born in East Germany in 1991, is an interplay of creativity and a deep connection with the universe that surrounds us.
Her art, which arises from personal visions, dreams and research, explores the interconnectedness of existence with the help of nature and technology. Beginning with an examination of the biochemistry of trees, research into fungal mycelium and the implementation of speculative machines, her work is linked to her personal history.
Her artistic work reflects her awareness of finiteness. In particular, this is a reaction to a serious cancer diagnosis in 2021, a moment that triggered a deep connection to nature during her treatment and inspired her to find a new purpose.
Her creations span different mediums - bio art, speculative art, technical and digital art. The aim is to reflect on nature and humanity's place in the universe.
With her work, Johanna Rummel encourages us to think about the interconnectedness of existence.
